Newt Gingrich slams Paul Ryan’s plan to overhaul Medicare

When even your own parties Presidential Candidates are slamming your own Medicare Reform plan. You know your plan is dead and buried without even a proper burial. Which is what Newt Gingrich has done to the Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan. Which makes it official that even as much as the House GOP and the Tea Party has talked about the need for Deficit Reduction. And spent all of 2010 and 2011 so far complaining about it. They still don’t have a serious plan to fix the problem. Because Medicare, Social Security and defense together. Represent over 60% of the Federal Budget. And they don’t have a plan to get overall savings in any of those programs. They don’t have a serious Deficit Reduction proposal that goes after more then 13% of the Federal Budget. They don’t have a Medicare, Social Security or a Defense Reform plan. Too bad for them because thats where the money is.

With Newt Gingrich coming out against the Ryan Medicare plan and supporting a Health Insurance Mandate. Which I believe he was against in the 2009-10 Health Care Reform debate. He’s not only distancing himself from the Ryan plan which is supported by the Tea Party. But he’s now in the dangerous neighborhood of “Romney Care”. Because Mitt Romney has a mandate in Health Care Reform plan as well. So even though Speaker Gingrich is right on policy grounds I believe. He’s shot two of his toes. Which will cause him problems down the road.

So how would you put some sort of limit on the big ticket Items? I agree that we have to find ways to reduce spending there. Defense seems obvious, in that we don’t need to spend as much as the next five or largest spenders combined, but I think the trick is to slow the spending down without causing more economy retraction problems. My thoughts- cut a couple of the big ticket items, start the troop returns and cap the rest of defense for the next five to ten years. The Social spending reductions are going to be harder. I suggest that medicare & medicaid either be capped with a Total-for-the-Year cap or better a per person Life-Time cap. What do you think of those ideas? These are things I’ll be discussing on my blog: over the next few weeks & months

    • I think I already wrote a few blogs on Deficit Reduction on WordPress which your welcome to check out. And its fairly simple but applying them is much harder. Because it involves Shared Sacrifice. In defense when we bring our troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq. We apply that revenue to Deficit Reduction not more government spending. We stop defending Developed Nations around the World that can afford to defend themselves. Not just in Europe, but Saudi Arabia, Korea and Japan as well. We close those bases, brings those troops home. And apply that revenue to Deficit Reduction not more government spending. Thats worth around 200B$ a year alone. A major reason why we have such a large Defense Budget.
With Social Security, we increase the Payroll Tax on High Earners and cut benefits for High Earners who don’t need them. Including Early Retirement from Social Security. And we raise the Retirement Age to 70, with a Hardship Exemption for people who physically and mentally can’t work that long. Same thing with Medicare.
And we increase taxes on High Earners and apply that revenue to Deficit Reduction not more government spending.
As well a broad Tax Reform where we eliminate Tax Loopholes and lower rates. We tax more but at Lower Levels.
There you go there are some of my solutions to Deficit Reduction that I’m sure will offend many.
